Cocktail Trivia

The Bloody Mary: The Bloody Mary is like the backyard BBQ. Everyone thinks his or hers is the best. The creation of the Bloody Mary in Paris is said to have coincided with the arrival of the first tins of tomato juice from the United States, right after WWI. Evidently, Frank Meier, head bartender at the Ritz Bar, had been making a Tomato Juice Cocktail for years. But his recipe was mixing on fundamental ingredient: Vodka. At Harry's Bar in Paris, bartender Ferdinand Petiot made the Bloody Mary with vodka. The name came into being because of the continued appearance a the e bar of a woman named Mary, who was regularly left waiting for her man, nursing one of Pete's tomato cocktails. A comparison was made between the imprisonment of Mary, Queen of Scots, and young Mary's long solitary hours at the bar. John Martin used the drink to promote a new vodka in the 1960's, Smirnoff Vodka. This led to an almost exclusive use of vodka in the drink, and helped to make it the morning after cocktail! We have found an excellent Bloody Mary Concentrate that you can mix with your favorite tomato juice. Here is a link to their website: Demitri's Bloody Mary Seasonings.
